Entrance into the Coyote Buttes area of the Vermilion Cliffs is by permit-only. A couple friends and I were honored to have permits for this particular time, when winter weather predominated the Utah-Arizona border for a few days. Normal desert scenes that span to the horizon were now localized, allowing the eye to focus on more intimate scenes. As my colleagues wandered off just over the horizon in this picture, I noticed a lone stripe within the sandstone. With the added fog and snow, the stripe seemed to reach out, in a much more vibrant way. I wandered over to its base, setup my tripod, and grabbed this shot.
