"Hidden Gem." While driving Alaskan highways this past autumn, I searched for waterfall opportunities. One day cruising along at 60MPH, I saw a small waterfall off several hundred yards in the distance. I jotted down a mental note to be sure to visit this spot in the future, time-permitting. The following day a window of opportunity came. I parked the car along the busy highway and took a jaunt out into the wilderness. Yes, wilderness. Even though one may be adjacent to a highway, once you step away from your vehicle in Alaska, you are genuinely in the wilderness. As I approached what I believed to be a small waterfall, in fact it turned out to be majestic and beautiful -- a hidden gem, albeit right in the visibility of all passersby.
